It is entertaining fiction. The metrocolumnist seems to be living in a fairy-tale world where the 19th century never ends. That happens to people who never get out of the office and look at the real world.
It is easy to sit in a comfortable hazard-free office and and mock the idea of requiring a safe workplace in return for taxpayer bailouts so we prevent a repeat of the needless workplace fatality that happened in Candler on 12 April, 2019. Would he ridicule safety at a "good job" in front of the victim's family? Is he brave enough to take the victim's place in that same job? It is more important to save lives than to chase ad revenue. His reasoning seems to be that if people are only offered bad jobs they have to stay here and take them. He forgot that people can move away to better jobs. Sadistic medieval labor relations don't work today. Just because boyle goes backwards doesn't mean the whole state has to. He should try one of those "good jobs" himself. Only a tiny minority want government to redistribute money from the poor to the rich. With the present shortage of labor he is not in a position to demand that people accept a decline in working conditions.
The corporate fantasy days when factory workers will put up with getting a raw deal and tolerate workplace fatalities are gone. Welcome to the real world.
