Overall

I would never recommend Sears Auto!

I am a college student, and after using the Wifi at SteamDot in the Sears Mall my car didn't start up yesterday. It was late and Sears Auto is one of the only places conveniently open on the weekend (probably to make up for their bad service, but I digress). So I set up an appointment with them, and even though my car was in the parking lot in front of SteamDot just on the other side of the garage, they said I would have to tow it to the front. So me and my dad towed it over using his pickup truck.

So this morning they do their $20 Die Hard test and call me saying that the reason it won't start is because of a bad battery. They say it'll cost $130, and even though I know batteries at Costco and Walmart are usually a lot cheaper, I reluctantly agree to pay for them to do the work just to get it over with.

They call and let me know the work is done, I get a ride from a friend, pay, then drive the car to the Dimond area. Park it for 2 hours, come back and it doesn't start!!! The same exact way it didn't start before!!!! So I call them asking for them to help tow the car back to their garage so they can fix the car correctly like they should have done the first time. They tell me they can't do that since it's not in their policy and that I'll have to pay for the car to get towed. I ask to speak to a manager and this guy Arnel lies to me and says he is the manager. So I ask my dad to tow me again this time from Dimond to the Sears Mall. Arnel offers to run the $20 Die Hard test for free a second time, but assures us there is no way to get a refund for the battery that they put in 2 hours prior. We point out that it's obviously not the battery and my dad asks to get a print out of the first test showing that the battery was at fault. He says that the machine doesn't do print outs, it just tells you what's wrong with the car. We argue and get fed up with him until he goes and gets the actual manager who is a courteous guy but can't do much for us. The manager says he can pay half of the fee that it took to tow the vehicle to the garage... but that doesn't help us since we towed it ourselves.

At this point, we're fed up and I tell the manager that they're going to get a bad review from me, to which he replies that there's only one Sears in Anchorage, AK and that it doesn't have much sway in their nationwide chain. Since they're willing to do the diagnostics a second time for free I take them up on their offer. They call me back letting me know that it's the starter and it'll cost $150 for parts and $180 for 1.5 hours of labor. I argue with the manager asking how come the first time they say it's the battery and the second time it's the starter. He says it was a rare miss and that there's no way they could've found it the first time (BS!!!). He offered to half the price of labor, which is nice, but who knows with this crooked company. It probably only took them half an hour to do the work. All in all, go somewhere else. Or wait until a weekday. These guys are just pawns for the corporate policy that screws people over. No wonder they're closing Sears stores all over the place!
