ArthritisHip damage is most often caused by degradation of the cartilage that provides cushioning between the end of the thigh bone (head of the femur) and the hip socket (acetabulum). Common causes include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, bone irregularities and osteonecrosis (bone decay). There are several surgical and non-surgical treatment options. If joint replacement surgery is needed, this involves the removal of the damaged parts of the hip and insertion of an artificial joint. The new joint restores pain-free movement, which increases the patient’s mobility and quality of life.
Weight ManagementAt OPA, many cases of back pain can be managed conservatively via lifestyle modifications, which may include an individualized exercise regime, weight loss, medication, traction and massage. If surgery is required, the lowest risk, most-effective approach is offered to resolve a patient’s pain and restore function.

OrthopedicsYou may schedule with any of our providers — but you may need to wait longer for an appointment with a physician. Please note that our physician assistants are not only certified PA-Cs, they have additional advanced training in orthopedics and many individuals further specialize in specific areas of concern. All work in concert with our physicians and of course if surgery is indicated, you will meet with a surgeon to discuss that possibility further.
ArthroscopyThe shoulder has a wide range of motion thanks to its ball-and-socket structure formed by the collarbone (clavicle), upper arm bone (humerus) and shoulder blade (scapula). Unfortunately this construction also makes the shoulder relatively unstable and vulnerable to injury. Injuries are often caused by sports like swimming, tennis, weightlifting and pitching or other activities that involve excessive, repetitive overhead motion. Common injuries include dislocation, subluxation, torn rotator cuff, torn labrum (a cuff of cartilage), bursitis, tendonitis, impingement and fractures. Arthroscopy is used to diagnose and treat many shoulder conditions. In very severe cases that do not respond to conservative treatment, shoulder replacement may be necessary to restore the patient to full motion and a pain-free state.

Bunions ProblemsThe foot and ankle are responsible for mobility and balance, and provide a firm basis of support for the body. They are composed of bone, ligaments, tendons, fascia, nerves and blood vessels and are very complex structures. Common problems include arch or heel pain, flat feet, sprains, fractures, arthritis and bunions and other things that can prevent normal foot and ankle function and cause significant pain.
Sports MedicineAddition, four full-time certified athletic trainers serve numerous local youth sporting programs and events at no charge to prevent sports injuries and care for injured athletes.
Physical TherapyDuring the visit, the provider will listen to your concerns, evaluate the area of concerns, order X-rays or MRIs as needed, make a diagnosis if possible and suggest an initial treatment plan. The plan may include anything from rest to physical therapy to exploring surgical solutions.
