Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. Macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the central tissue of the retina, which records the image we see and sends them to the optic nerve from the eye to the brain. This central portion of the retina is known as the macula, which controls our ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors and sees fine detail. Macular degeneration may cause blurring and distortion of the central vision in the eye. The words on a page may look blurred or wavy and straight lines may look distorted.

Cataracts
Development of cataracts is usually part of the normal human aging process. The natural, clear lens of the eye gradually becomes cloudy, blocking light as it passes through the eye. The condition can be compared to a window that is frosted or “fogged” with steam.
Cataract Surgery
When you have a cataract, the lens within your eye has become cloudy and your vision becomes impaired. It must be removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens, which surgeons call an Intraocular Lens, or IOL. This new lens gives patients clear, cataract free vision. Your surgeon will only perform cataract surgery on one eye at a time and if needed, typically performs cataract surgery on the second eye a few weeks later.
Eye Exam
Most people start to experience issues at night, especially while driving. Car lights can have an unusual impairment on night vision and street signs can become difficult to read. Glare and halos at night are very common in patients with cataracts. Colors also appear faded and not as vibrant. Although, cataracts form so slowly over time, patients don’t typically notice the loss of vibrancy with colors. Patients also start to require more and more light in order to read well. Patients might also feel that they need a stronger prescription for their glasses, but eventually, glasses no longer help and the cataract must be removed. Some patients even experience double vision when looking through only one eye. An eye exam from an optometrist or ophthalmologist can help quickly determine if you have a cataract. All diabetics are at risk for developing diabetic retinopathy, but not everyone with diabetes develops it. Diabetes affects blood vessels throughout the body and diabetic retinopathy occurs when blood vessels in the eyes are affected by this process.

Ultrasound
Once numb, your surgeon then uses a technology called phacoemulsification to break the cataract into smaller pieces so it can be easily removed. The phacoemulsification technique uses ultrasound which allows surgeons to perform cataract surgery in only minutes and helps with a faster healing time. Once your cataract is removed, your surgeon will then implant an artificial IOL, which will allow you to see well. Many patient will still require glasses in order to see well in the distance and nearly all will require reading glasses or bifocals in order to see up close.

Sagging of the forehead and eyebrow tissue can compound issues like ptosis and increase the need for blepharoplasty.

Skin Cancer
The eyelids and skin around the eyes are not immune to skin cancers. Fortunately, most of the eyelid cancers we see are of the Basal Cell variety. Basal cell cancer spreads locally and once it is “out”, it is gone. For everything but the small localized growths, we utilize the services of a Mohs surgeon to completely excise the cancer using serial microscopic analysis.
Lesions
Tarsorrhaphy is a surgical procedure in which the eyelids are partially sewn together to narrow the eyelid opening. It may be done to protect the cornea in cases of corneal exposure. It is one of the safest and most effective procedures for healing difficult-to-treat corneal lesions. Tarsorrhaphy is most commonly performed to protect the cornea from exposure caused by inadequate eyelid coverage, as may occur in Graves disease or facial nerve (CN VII) dysfunctions such as Bell palsy. It can also be used to aid in the healing of indolent corneal ulceration sometimes seen with tear-film deficiency, herpes simplex or zoster, stem cell dysfunction, or CN V dysfunction (neurotrophic lesions), Möbius syndrome or after corneal graft surgery. Tarsorrhaphies may be temporary or permanent; in the latter case, raw tarsal edges are created to form a lasting adhesion. They may be total or partial, depending on whether all or only a portion of the lid is fused and which part of the eye is therefore is occluded.
