Overall

We had been property owners with this city for the past 22 years. Early on, it wasn't so bad. Lately though, issues with dealing with this city are terrible and ultimately helped us to decide to put our house on the market.

We owned a rental property and our last tenant left without paying their bill. Before a new tenant moved in, the city tried to force us to pay the bill. Since I was knowledgeable enough to tell them that wouldn't fly, they made us put the utility bill in our names and pay it and made it stay that way even though we had a completely new tenant. So, each month we had to pay the utility bill ourselves for utilities we weren't using and then, once the tenant paid us the rent and utilities, we could recoup our money.

Then, they cited our previous tenant for a number of things like parking in the yard, or trash cans, etc. Apparently our tenant never let us know. Then, Adelanto tried to let us know but sent the info to an address we had not lived at for 12 years. Keep in mind, they had our new address because we were paying a monthly utility bill (See above). Notifications go to old address, no response from us of course, so Adelanto puts a lien on our house. Our tenants had bailed (see above) so we got stuck paying the violations and the lien release, even though the city erred in not contacting us properly.

Final straw came when we sold the house. They would not let us disconnect the utilities without showing proof of sale in the form of our closing documents. Keep in mind all other utilities just require a phone call or online request to have service disconnected. I asked, 'What if I was just moving out of state and leaving the house to a tenant?' They told me I'd still have to pay a utility bill until proof of residency was changed to show us moving out or a new tenant coming in. In other words, it couldn't be vacant without utilities being turned on. These utilities for an unused house were about $90 month. When I finally submitted my paperwork to PROVE to them that we sold the house, I let them know it was the most 'broken' city infrastructure I'd ever worked with. I heard later they are going bankrupt. This is why. They don't respect or appreciate their property owners so they drive folks away. Who would want to live in a city where you have to deal with ridiculous laws their city council dreams up?

They are a broke city that doe...

They are a broke city that does not no how to follow the rules. Code enforcement gets up set because you have trash cans in your front yard. Well I go out side and 10 other house have the same thing. But they did not get a code write them up. So they are broke they can not even fix there roads then they can not even follow there own laws that they set. I even herd from my father threw cal trans they they leave batteries all over there yard leakig. So who is worse trash cans out front or somebody that can not even follow there own laws. and write up everybody that need to be writen up. So yes they are broke and lazy. I will be counting everyhouse with trash cans out front and calling daily.
